Put two Defence heroes in front and Attack or Support heroes behind them. Raise the five together by level, but concentrate universal shards and skill medals on the heroes and breakpoints that change the squad\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Start with the three things people confuse<\/h2>\n<p>Every hero has a <strong>battlefield role<\/strong>, a <strong>troop type<\/strong> and a <strong>rarity<\/strong>. They are separate decisions:<\/p>\n<div class=\"gza-table-scroll\">\n<table class=\"gza-guide-table\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Hero label<\/th>\n<th>What it tells you<\/th>\n<th>What to do with it<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>D\u00e9fense<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>The hero is designed to absorb pressure or protect the team.<\/td>\n<td>Normally place it in the front row and prioritise survival.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Attaque<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>The hero\u2019s main job is dealing damage.<\/td>\n<td>Protect it in the back row and invest in its reliable damage skills.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Soutien<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>The hero improves the squad through buffs, healing, control or protection.<\/td>\n<td>Place it behind the frontline and judge the effect on the whole team.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Tank \/ Aircraft \/ Missile<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>The hero\u2019s troop type, used for counters and lineup bonuses.<\/td>\n<td>Build around one main type before funding a second full squad.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>UR \/ SSR \/ SR<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>The hero\u2019s rarity and the type of shards used for progression.<\/td>\n<td>Do not replace a developed hero merely because a higher-rarity portrait appears.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Build the five-hero formation first<\/h2>\n<p>A standard formation has two exposed positions at the front and three protected positions behind them. Last War\u2019s official guidance places Defence heroes in front, with Attack and Support heroes in the back. Read the role icon rather than judging the hero by appearance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>A dependable starting structure<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Front left and front right:<\/strong> two Defence heroes capable of surviving the opening pressure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Back row:<\/strong> the main attacker, a second damage dealer and either another attacker or a Support hero.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strongest lane:<\/strong> place the tougher defender opposite the enemy lane causing the earliest collapse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Protected damage:<\/strong> keep the attacker receiving your best gun, chip and skill investment behind a stable defender.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tank, Aircraft and Missile also form a counter cycle: <strong>Tank counters Missile, Missile counters Aircraft, and Aircraft counters Tank.<\/strong> A matching lineup grants +5% HP, Attack and Defence with three heroes of one type, +15% with four, and +20% with all five. Community references document the standard five-star path below. The strategic mistake is not adding a tier\u2014it is leaving premium universal shards scattered across several heroes with no important breakpoint close enough to finish.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gza-evidence-note\"><strong>Simple shard rule<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your main attacker is 40 shards from four stars and a new bench hero is 475 shards from the same point, finish the attacker unless the new hero is part of a deliberate replacement plan. One completed breakpoint normally helps today; two unfinished projects do not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Skills: upgrade the job, not the row<\/h2>\n<p>Skill medals become scarce as skill levels rise. Do not press every available upgrade from left to right. The live skill description is the final authority. After a major skill upgrade, repeat the same battle and confirm that damage, survival or support contribution improved.<\/p>\n<h2>A sensible investment order<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Name the main five.<\/strong> Choose the squad used for everyday progression, alliance battles and most competitive content.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fix the formation.<\/strong> Two proper frontline heroes must survive long enough for the back row to work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep useful levels moving.<\/strong> Raise the main five before spending Hero EXP on heroes that do not enter battle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take the core five towards four stars.<\/strong> Give the primary attacker or failing frontline priority when a breakpoint is close.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Concentrate skill medals.<\/strong> Fund the skills responsible for damage, survival or team support instead of maintaining matching numbers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Only then widen the roster.<\/strong> Develop a second troop-type formation when the first squad is stable rather than cannibalising it every week.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Three spending styles<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Free-to-play or very light spend:<\/strong> commit to one troop type, protect universal UR shards, and accept that a developed SSR can remain useful while its UR replacement catches up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moderate spend:<\/strong> finish four-star breakpoints across the core squad before chasing multiple five-star heroes or several exclusive weapons.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Competitive spend:<\/strong> build the main formation to its planned breakpoints, then develop the counter formation as a separate project with its own frontline, skills and gear plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to decide who gets the next upgrade<\/h2>\n<p>Use battle evidence instead of the red notification dot:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A defender dies in the opening seconds:<\/strong> raise its survival skill, level, armour or radar; also test the other front lane.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The squad survives but times out:<\/strong> improve the main attacker\u2019s active skill, offensive gear and relevant research.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A back-row hero dies first:<\/strong> inspect the defender in front of it and change lanes before spending.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A new UR hero lowers the result:<\/strong> restore the developed hero and build the replacement until its stars and skills are ready.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Several heroes are one tier from different stars:<\/strong> finish the hero whose next complete star solves the current bottleneck.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Common mistakes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Levelling every hero:<\/strong> Hero EXP placed on an unused roster does not help the squad clearing today\u2019s content.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Putting Attack heroes in front:<\/strong> high damage does not compensate for losing the hero before its important skills fire.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Making all skills equal:<\/strong> medal costs rise while low-impact skills consume the materials needed by the hero\u2019s defining ability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Starting too many five-star projects:<\/strong> the final star is expensive; four-star strength across the main five can be a better immediate return.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Replacing by rarity alone:<\/strong> a newly unlocked UR hero can be weaker today than a properly developed SSR.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Copying one universal priority list:<\/strong> PvP, bosses and campaign stages do not always reward the same skill or formation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Use the Academy planners<\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"gza-text-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gamezoneacademy.com\/fr\/outils\/hero-upgrade-priority-planner\/\">Open the Hero Upgrade Priority Planner \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enter the five heroes you actually use and record their role, stars, skills, gear and exclusive weapon status.
